Description:

Gates of the Arctic is my attempt at an Alaskan Summer scent. Gates of the Arctic is a National Park comprised entirely within the Arctic circle.
The idea was brought to me by a friend a year or so ago and we had some fun discussion and ideas.
Enter Josh Nute, another friend who happened to live in Alaska growing up. Between the three of us, we were able to craft Gates of the Arctic; a fresh and clean scent, like the cool Alaskan arctic air, with the scent of woods, rushing water, tall grass, and riverside flora. I hope you will enjoy what has been nothing short of an absolute pleasure to create.

In Josh’s words:

“Gates of the Arctic is a scent that brings me back to the time when I was growing up in Southeast Alaska.

Specifically, the island of Sitka; an island that hugs the interior Southeast line of islands West of British Columbia and a maritime passage to the greatest fishing in the world. Making it easily understandable as to why the battles between the Tlingit Natives and the Russians occurred on the largest land mass city in the United States.

The scent notes remind me of the start of the warming time of year. When the mountains were still capped with snow. The frost still forming every morning. The breeze carrying the chill. Yet the sun rapidly forcing life to start with explosions of color, sounds, and smells.

This is the time of year when nature is streaming with life as winter's slumber is ending and the urgency of the warmer months' productivity rushes in. Life has to happen fast in these few months while the weather is mild in Alaska.

When this chapter of a seasonal change occurs, you get the privilege of witnessing and experiencing everything that the area has to offer. While experiencing the last frontier as the season warms and new life begins, you are able to hear the popping and cracking of ice and snow, the buzzing of busy birds, and the start of gurgling fresh waterways making their way to the surrounding bays of the Pacific. The large game off in the distance are calling out for companionship. The sights are endless, jaw dropping, and inspiring with fresh purple color of the fireweed and the bright white of the yarrow poking above the permafrost, and the dark greens of the pines shedding their winter cloaks. You will see the brightest sun you have ever experienced, in the most blue, endless sky, above jagged snow-covered peaks. This scent brought me back to a time when things were so much simpler, life was much slower. The scent of the crisp, fresh air off of the mountains and glaciers, the wild grasses pushing through the muskeg, and the woods coming to life are the scents that I get to experience with this creation.

In this setting, the feeling of insignificance could not be avoided, as it created more respect and understanding for the sheer awesomeness that surrounded me. This is a place I will carry with me and will always be my home, a place I long to be, a place that leads me to solace a place called Gates of the Arctic.”
